Karate

A couple weeks ago, Dave asked Landon if he might be interested in taking Karate. I'm not exactly sure where that came from, but Landon immediately said yes! Usually if we ask him if he wants to try soccer, b-ball or anything like that, he just politely answers "no thank you!" So when he said yes, I called the karate place in Westfield to find out how he could start! Dave has had a few students go through that facility and the location is pretty great. Bonus - they were running a super special, so it was a perfect time to start.

Here are a few pictures of Landon in his karate uniform - of course at his sessions they do not wear socks and shoes!

Landon and Dave were both laughing at this picture - I was trying to get the back (obviously) - ha ha!

Showing me some of his moves....like how to hold his hands by his cheeks so always ready and punching!

I took him for the first time last Thursday - here he is on the right waiting to start class. It was a full class that night and I didn't have a clear shot of him for pictures, so no in class pictures yet!

On Thursday, he got to break a board - yes, you read that right! His 3rd class and he got to break a board! It's amazing how they can make them just right for beginners! (wink) He was so proud!! When we got home, he (of course) had to re-create it with Dave holding the board together so he could "break" it again!

First, you tap it twice where you are going to hit it so your aim is just right. You have to tell your mind where your hand is going to go.

Bam - that's how it's done!

This is what the board looked like in class before...

And after Landon was done with it! They all thought it was cool to keep the board!

After I took the above pictures he just had to do it again! Look at that face!

So far, so good! I think an individual sport like karate will be good for Landon for a number of reasons. I think it will help him get ready for team sports down the road and build his confidence. It will also help his balance and coordination, which is something he could use!

Way to go Landon - I can't wait to see how this progresses!!!
